If you care about your skin, wear sunscreen, period. Everyday, and reapply, especially when your outside and always consistently throughout the day. People just don’t realize how much UV damage we are getting! Sitting by a window, driving in your car, it’s powerful and it’s damaging. Yes, there is an amount of sun that is good for you and we need it. The best time is in the morning between 6am and 10am, and you take in all you really need in about 15 to 30 minutes. That being said, I’m not saying at that point the party’s over! I’m just recommending that after that, is when you pour on your protection.
I get it, I’m a lake girl, I love the outdoors, especially the water, but after all the effort and expense that I’ve given my skin, (and with good results) I’m not willing to sacrifice an unnecessary tan, much less a burn and the ending results of damaged skin! Tan skin is damaged skin, period. It’s so common for people to worry about their heart, liver, immune systems, etc., then why doesn’t it make sense to protect our skin? Our precious skin is the largest organ of our bodies. It plays a vital role as our protector of our organs and its barrier function is extremely important for our overall health and sustainability. Pouring on protection will ensure your safe to enjoy the outdoors and our skin can resist new sun spots, facial discoloration, fine lines, wrinkles, and premature aging, as well as the looming threat of skin cancer. (Which, I promise I won’t start that rant.)
Ideally you should be using a Broad Spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapplying every 3 hours (more if swimming). I completely understand if you hate putting sunscreen on over your makeup! There are some really great mineral powders that go on dry, right over your makeup. Some are tinted and some are not. They’re great to keep in your purse or car and pop out whenever it’s time. I use Eminence Sun Defense Minerals Water Resistant SPF 30 Honey Apple. Love this! Please don’t be skimpy when it comes to your face either! If you do prefer a liquid sunscreen, find a favorite that is specifically designed for your face. This avoids the greasiness and clogged pours that could occur if you slather on a thick product that is really meant for your body. There are physical and chemical sunscreens. I recommend a physical one with Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide (natural minerals). They have done an amazing job with these ingredients so you don’t have to look like you are painting your face like a clown, which was the case in the old days. To ensure That you have enough on, fill the hollow of your palm (about 1/2 tsp.) to coat your face, neck, and ears. You may have to apply two coats to finish what you’ve squeezed but, that’s how to make
sure you’re covered!
So, please, make it a habit and protect your gorgeous selfie! No excuses 🙂
