There are all kinds of wonderful ingredients that are performance driven for your skin. It can be
overwhelming when you try to figure out what’s best to use. Just like your body, your skin needs important nutrients to remain healthy too. You need to find the balance of the right ingredients just as you do in your diet.
The best way to look at ingredients is to think of them in categories. Now, of course everyone has their own specific type of skin but there are overall good ingredients that are healthy for everyone if you want to have glowy, dewy, fresh skin.
One of the most important ingredients to incorporate into your regime is antioxidants. I have explained this many times in the treatment room to clients. This is the easiest way for everyone to understand this. The apple. When you cut it open, it turns brown, why? It’s because of all of
the free radicals in the air in the form of dirt, debris, pollution, etc. but, when we dip the apple in lemon juice it preserves it a little longer. Well, the same thing is happening to our skin everyday when we go out into the world unprotected. All the free radicals are negative ions floating around in the air trying to find a balance. They will adhere to your skin thus causing premature aging. Putting on an antioxidant every morning will protect you from that and really good ones will reverse damage that has been done. They are in the forms of Vitamin C and E, green tea, beta glucan, licorice, and some plant oils. I have some really powerful ones in the spa and I use in my treatment room.
Next, skin restorers or peptides. These are cell communicating ingredients. Without getting too scientific when peptides are added into a topical application the cells communicate that more and better collagen needs to be manufactured. As we age our collagen breaks down and we progressively get fine lines, wrinkles, and lose our plumpness in the skin. Peptides will trigger new collagen production.
Fortifiers. I also talk alot with my clients about keeping a healthy barrier mantle. This is so important for maintaining beautiful skin. When our PH balance on the mantle gets out of whack we experience all sorts of problems. Too dry, too oily, clogged pores, acne, rashes, whatever! Using hydrators and skin repairing ingredients will keep it healthy, smooth, and young. These come in the form of ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and omega fatty acids, to name a few. Incorporating these will ensure a properly functioning mantle that operates the way a youthful one does.
My favorite elixirs on the list is alpha-and beta-hydroxy acids. This is for exfoliation or resurfacing the skin. Basically these acids aid in the shedding of the dry dead skin cells. Our body naturally sheds its skin about every 28 days but as we age this process slows down. When we use these acids we can encourage that cellular turnover rate to increase thus letting our new skin come to the surface faster. For me using these acids changed my skin in ways I never thought possible.
Of course, last but not least, sunscreen. Without this everything else is pointless and a waste of your money. It’s like working out, eating right, and thinking you can still smoke cigarettes and not get lung cancer. We know how damaging the sun is to your skin and we know what it does. Tan skin is damaged skin period. I’m certain people don’t realize how much UV rays we’re
actually getting on a daily basis. Driving in your car, sitting next to a window. We should be applying it all day, every couple of hours. I do have Eminence Mineral Powder for those who hate the feel of a physical lotion. Its excellent!
So, these ingredients are your building blocks for skin health, balance, youth, and radiance. Incorporating one or all are recommended for every skin type. They are on my list of must haves and now yours too! Hope this helps!
